We apply the concept of 'the policy mood' to the Spanish case. Our estimates uncover what appears to be a left-right dimension and suggest that the Spanish electorate have steadily moved rightwards from 1978 to 2012. This movement is apparently driven by both economics and government policy and may help explain the rise of the right-wing Partido Popular.
