While transparency seems a political fashion promoted by institutional actors, there is also a movement towards more transparency at the 'actors level.' Political parties are a clear such instance, but business associations are changing in this regard as well. The case is that peak national business associations (PNBA) are currently under pressure across Europe for many reasons, for instance, the emergence of large companies, the erosion of collective bargaining structures, and a piecemeal decreasing of membership. Thus, PNBA have been adapting to the new political and economic context in order to somehow remain relevant. This means PNBA are adjusting their organizational logics to the new demands (more transparency, better services to members) and the new competitors (specialised business platforms, large companies). This paper explores in a comparative way how PNBA in Spain, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom have responded to the crisis by examining their corporate budgets, and their internal governance dynamics in the last five years.
