The Institute for European Studies and the Department of Political Science of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel are hiring 5 PhD researchers and 2 postdoctoral researchers for their research programmes on ‘Evaluating Democratic Governance in Europe’ (EDGE) and on ‘Participation and Representation in Modern Democracies' (PARTIREP).

Applicants for PhD bursaries (vacancy IES/2013/008) are asked to write a research proposal on one or more of the following five topics:

1. The Europeanization of equality policies for ethnic minority men and women

2. The substantive representation of women and ethnic minorities in Belgian politics

3. The EU’s role in international institutions

4. New technologies and democratic governance in the EU

5. The personalization of political representation

Postdoctoral candidates (vacancy IES/2013/009) are expected to pursue research in one of the following topics:

1. European policy-making and/or multi-level governance with an empirical focus on EU climate/energy/environmental policy

2. Theoretical and normative reflections on democratic governance
