PhD position Hamburg/Madrid

The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social-science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East and combines this analysis with innovative comparative research on international relations, development and globalisation, violence and security, and political systems. The GIGA seeks to hire a Research Fellow.

Applications are invited for a 65% position, with a contract of 36 months, starting March/April 2015.

The successful candidate will work in the research project "Top-down or Bottom-up?

Ethnic Voting in Latin America" which is financed for three years by the German Research Foundation (DFG) to analyse differences in voting behaviour across ethnic groups in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, and Panama. The project team will be based at the GIGA Institute of Latin American Studies in Hamburg (Detlef Nolte, Almut Schilling-Vacaflor) and the Department of Social Sciences at the University Carlos III of Madrid (Oliver Strijbis). A research stay at one of the partner institutions in Latin America is possible.
