  • IPSA at the 2011 ISA Convention in Montreal, Canada

IPSA was active at the International Studies Association’s Annual Convention in Montreal, Canada, sponsoring three panels on the topic of global governance.

- Where is the “Global” in Global Governance? Perspectives from China, India and Brazil
- Southern Countries and Global Governance: Their Roles in the United Nations Systems
- Fragile States and Global Governance: Exploring the Links

The IPSA Secretariat operated a booth for the duration of the convention and ensured liaison with ISA delegates by providing information on the upcoming IPSA World Congress of Political Science in Madrid in 2012 and on services offered by IPSA.  Available at the table were membership brochures, Madrid 2012 flyers, copies of the International Political Science Review, International Political Science Abstracts and History of IPSA, as well as promotional items. Many participants also took the opportunity to subscribe to IPSA’s monthly newsletter.

Among the many IPSA Executive Committee (EC) members attending the convention were Lourdes Sola, Past President of IPSA; Helen Milner, First Vice-President, Vice-President Americas; Leslie Pal, Chair of the Committee on Research and Training; Bertrand Badie, editor of the upcoming IPSA Political Science Encyclopedia; Hyug Baeg Im, member of the EC; and Guy Lachapelle, Secretary General of IPSA. A number of IPSA members also dropped by to introduce themselves.

  • IAPSS Pays a Visit to the IPSA Secretariat

In Montreal for the ISA Convention, IAPSS officers took the opportunity to visit IPSA’s Montreal offices. The meeting with the IPSA Secretariat was very productive, as agreements were reached on coordination, information-sharing and joint promotion; also discussed was the prospect of new partnership activities between the two sister organizations.

A Survey of Religiosity Around the World - News from the International Social Survey Programme

Religion and the diversity of religious behaviour throughout the world represent a subject of considerable discussion nowadays; yet the  empirical foundation is dispersed at best, even anecdotal. The mission of the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) is to create a sound empirical basis for scientific research on societal developments at the international level. In 2008 and 2009, an ISSP survey was conducted in 40 countries around the world to address the topic of religious behaviour.

The full release of ISSP 2008 on Religion III (v2.0.0) is now available. It covers no less than 40 countries worldwide. This marks the third round of the ISSP Religion module (previously fielded in 1991 and 1998).

The 2008 questionnaire covered the following topics:

   1. Impact of religion on socio-political attitudes and behaviours
   2. Religious change
   3. Religious tolerance and extremism
   4. Non-Western religious traditions

Online documentation and data (in SPSS, SAS or Stata format) may be downloaded free of charge via the GESIS ZACAT analysis database at:

  • Job and Internship Opportunities in Europe

As part of their Grad Jobs Campaign, European Movement Ireland members have been posting job vacancies and internship opportunities on their Facebook page, through their Twitter account and via emails forwarded to college career offices throughout Ireland.

All too often, graduates are simply not aware of the opportunities available to develop their careers in Europe. Positions in Brussels are not restricted to graduates with a degree in politics, and there are opportunities in almost every field of interest and study – opportunities that, for the most part, are not restricted to Irish citizens.

A full list of these vacancies will be posted on their new Jobs and Internships in Europe page at http://www.europeanmovement.ie/index.php?id=13091.
