Created in 1951, the INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL SCIENCE ABSTRACTS is among the most important sources of bibliographical information for researchers and students in political science and in related fields. Six issues annually provide about 8,000 abstracts of articles selected from among nearly 1,000 journals and yearbooks worldwide. Now in its 63th year, the print edition has been published by SAGE London since 2007. Editor Paul Godt and co-editor Serge Hurtig invite IPSA members to subscribe at the special price of US$94 (185$ for two-years) instead of 187$ (374$ for two-years) (contact membership@ipsa.org). Libraries and other institutions interested in the fully searchable online database are asked to contact EBSCO (database from Vol. 1, Issue 1) or Ovid (since 1989), each of which offers substantial discounts to developing countries.

  • What’s New on the IPSAPortal?

News from the IPSAPortal:

1) The Participatory Condition International Colloquium (#PCond) hosted by the Media@McGill Center at Montréal’s McGill University recently came to a successful conclusion. The complete video section is now available on the website. The conference was paired with a Participatory Open Online Course (or POOC) on the history, problems and potential of participatory media in contemporary society. The POOC is still open to public. (Special Collection on the IPSAPortal)

2) On Sunday, December 8, South Africans began a week of commemorations following the death of Nelson Mandela on December 5. Thanks to Onlinenewspapers.com, readers can follow all the events as well as comments and analysis from newspapers around the world. The New York Times, for its part, has dedicated a section of its website to the commemoration week. (Media Sources on the IPSAPortal)

3) Does the United States still play a leadership role on the international stage? The public seems to think so. The latest Pew Research Center report, titled “Public Sees U.S. Power Declining as Support for Global Engagement Slips,” shows that from 2004 to 2013, the percentage of people who believe that the US has a “less important and powerful role than 10 years ago” has increased from 20 to 53 per cent. The percentage of people who believe that the “US, as a world leader, plays a more important and powerful role” has dropped from 45 to 20 per cent. (Research Institutes on the IPSAPortal)

4) The World Public Opinion Project managed by the Center on Policy Attitude (COPA) recently brought its focus to bear on the Middle East; more specifically, direct survey results (including those of the “Israeli and Palestinian Public Opinion on Negotiating a Final Status Peace Agreement” survey) and indirect analyses such as the CNN inquiry on American public opinion (“Framing of Syria Issue Key to Public Support”) point to difficulties in managing public opinion locally and internationally. (Thematic Networks on the IPSAPortal)

5) The European Union faces a number of internal challenges. Chief among them is rising Euro scepticism, exacerbated by the global economic crisis. The latest issue of European Union Politics addresses these issues, focusing on European attitudes toward Europe and European politics. (Journals on the IPSAPortal)

Silvina Danesi Appointed New Executive Director of the Canadian Political Science Association

IPSA welcomes the nomination of Silvina Danesi as new Executive Director of the Canadian Political Science Association (CPSA).

According to CPSA President, Alain Noël, “Silvina is an experienced, competent and enthusiastic person who will be a great asset for our association. As you can see from the biographical note below, she has a PhD in political science to go along with recent teaching experience and experience working with parliamentarians and civil servants. She is also fully trilingual, and she already has a number of ideas for the association.”

Silvina completed her undergraduate (Law and Political Science) and master studies (Administration and Public Policy) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During her studies, she worked at the Argentine Congress in various positions, including staff researcher, policy advisor, and chief of staff to the clerk in charge of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs. Ms. Danesi immigrated to Canada in 2004. In 2011, she obtained her PhD in Political Science from the Université de Montréal and completed her postdoctoral studies at the Bell Chair for the Study of Canadian Parliamentary Democracy (Carleton University-SSHRC postdoctoral fellowship).

As a PhD candidate and research assistant with the Canada Research Chair in Electoral Studies, she organized an international meeting for the Making Electoral Democracy Work Research Project. As a postdoctoral fellow, Silvina served on the organizing committee for the 2013 Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies conference. As coordinator of student volunteers, she was responsible for recruiting and overseeing 36 students from the Université du Québec en Outaouais, UNAM-Canada, Carleton University and York University. Also as a postdoc, she sat on the committee that drafted the proposal to create a minor in Latin American and Caribbean studies, which was recently approved.

Silvina’s field of expertise is comparative politics, with a focus on legislative institutions and the politics of international trade and a specialization in Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, she is working as a researcher and contract instructor at Carleton University’s Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Proluta: Brazilian Research Group on Contentious Politics

The Brazilian Federal University of Goias (UFG) recently launched an innovative research group on contentious politics. The UFG is affiliated with the university’s Centre for the Study of Latin American and Comparative Politics and its graduate program in political science.

Banber - Bulletin in International Relations and Political Science

The Yerevan-based quarterly social science bulletin Banber has been published since 1967. The RA Higher Certification Commission lists it among the scientific periodicals publishing the principal findings advanced in doctorate dissertations and candidate theses. Banber is the successor of the following periodicals: Scientific Bulletin of State University of Armenian SSR (1925-30), “Works” (1934-36), Scientific Works (1939-61), and Scientific Bulletin (1962-66).

The scientific works carried out in YSU and in the Republic’s scientific and educational institutions are published in Banber, with a special focus on Armenian issues. Collaborators include leading scientists in RA institutions, the diaspora and foreign countries. As of January 1, 2010, the bulletin was published three times a year.

During the same period, Banber was published in six series. They are: 1. “Armenian Studies”; 2. “Philology”; 3. “Law”; 4. “Philosophy, Psychology”; 5. “Sociology, Economics”; 6. “International Relations, Political Science.”

Each of the series has its own editorial board and editor.

The materials are published in Armenian, Russian and English. Published articles have summaries in the two other languages, and brief biographies of the authors are provided in three languages.

The social sciences periodical boasts a solid scientific reputation among similar bulletins: before going to press, it is reviewed, edited, proofread and compared with different sources. The periodical does not accept publications that fail to meet its scientific standards.

The editorial staff of the bulletin Banber Yerevani Hamalsarani consists of:

Editor-in-Chief – Hrachik Mirzoyan – Sc. D. in Philosophy

Editorial Board:
Atanesyan A. V. – Sc. D. in Political Science, Associate Professor
Aleksanyan A. S. - PhD, Associate Professor
Avetisyan L. V. – (Deputy Editor-in-Chief) – PhD
Gabuzyan A. H. – Sc. D. in Law, Professor
Gonchar N. A. – (Deputy Editor-in-Chief) – PhD, Associate Professor
Zohrabyan E. A. – Sc. D. in History, Professor
Harutjunyan E. A. – Sc. D. in Philosophy, Professor
Hovakimyan A. E. (Executive Secretary) – PhD
Hovsepyan L. S. – Sc. D. in Philology, Professor
Simonyan A. H. – Sc. D. in History, Professor, corresponding member NAS RA

In previous years, members of the bulletin’s editorial staff received awards and letters of acknowledgement from the governing body of YSU in recognition of their good work.

In recent years, the Galust Gyulbenkyan Foundation has supported the printing of the bulletin.

All Banber materials have been posted on the University website since 2012: http://www.ysu.am/science/en/journals
