Abstract review in progress - results forwarded by email December 2
With the abstract review process now well under way, close to half of the 5,500 abstracts have been reviewed. All abstract authors can expect to receive an email notifying them of the final results by December 2. Be sure to check your junk mail folder, as your email server may filter the email as junk mail.
In the meantime, please refrain from sending email requests for individual updates, unless you do not receive a notification email on December 2.
Travel Grant Application Deadline - December 9, 2011
IPSA travel grants are funded from registration fees received for the world congress. These funds are intended to make it easier for people who live and work in developing economies and who couldn’t otherwise afford to attend the world congress. Recipients must be presenters or co-presenters at the event and must be listed in the program. Travel allowances of up to US$1,000 are offered on the recommendation of the Travel Grants Subcommittee, which comes under the Program Committee. Travel grant funds will be allocated to recipients ON-SITE and not in advance of the congress.
The deadline to receive applications for IPSA travel grants is December 9, 2011. Applications must include the following supporting documents (in PDF format only):
- Proof of citizenship (identification page of passport)
- A resumé or CV
- A letter of reference (from an employer or an educational institution or from the chair or convenor of your panel)
Email applications will not be accepted. All applications must be submitted online. Click here to apply for a travel grant.

From Specialization to Teamwork: IPSA Research Committees and Current Challenges to the Discipline of Political Science
Rainer Eisfeld (Osnabrueck University, Germany)
From the keynote lecture given at the inaugural session of the joint IPSA RC 37/RC 02 conference, titled “on Rethinking Political Development: Multifaceted Role of Elites and Transforming Leadership.”
Winter Park, Florida, USA, November 7, 2011
Earlier this year, in a process I feel privileged to have been a part of, the IPSA Executive Committee agreed on the first mission statement in our association’s history. This mission is now posted on the IPSA website. The mission statement embodies two visions: one of service to the community, and a second of organizing research with the intention of ensuring the high caliber of that service. To quote from the first:
“Political science…(is aimed) at contribut(ing) to the quality of public deliberation and decision-making… Ultimately, IPSA supports the role of political science in empowering men and women to participate more effectively in political life, whether within or beyond the states in which they live.”

Applicants are asked to forward their CV by email to Professor Ilyin, along with a statement describing their objectives for taking IPSR forward. The application deadline is December 1, 2011.
Rethinking Development: Security, Justice and Leadership
Dr. Zillur R. Khan (Rosebush Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconsin, and Adjunct Professor, Rollins College, USA)
Chair of IPSA RC 37 and workshop organizer
From the keynote address given at the inaugural session of the joint IPSA RC 37/RC 02 conference, titled “on Rethinking Political Development: Multifaceted Role of Elites and Transforming Leadership.”
Winter Park, Florida, USA, November 7, 2011
Distinguished delegates and guests:
On behalf of the IPSA Research Committee on Rethinking Political Development, I am pleased to welcome you to this workshop held as part of the joint conference titled “Multifaceted Role of the Elites and Transforming Leadership in Political Development.”
This IPSA research committee was created in the early 1970s by Professor Karl Wolfgang Deutsch, a world renowned political scientist, with the specific purpose of recognizing a much greater degree of developmental pluralism in the field of political science than was ever acknowledged by scholars. Drawing on Aristotelian pragmatism, Deutsch sought to explore critical issues and problems imbedded in the complex, multilayered affairs of the polis, with a special focus on the probable causes of progressing or declining human conditions. Using an Aristotelian “golden mean” approach based on checks and balances where mutual checks can be turned into cooperative endeavors for common good, Professor Deutsch sought to broaden the scope of our discipline by continuously rethinking political development.
