Nation-state may well remains the key crucible variable of power; however in Spain the concept remains also problematic, with implications for Goverments and the State.

Investigations on Spanish nationalisms are gradually reaching an important stage in political science studies. However, most of these investigations have focused on conservative approaches and right-wing Spanish nationalism. There is a widespread perception in Spanish society that the conservatives are behind the reshaping of Spanish nationalism in the current democratic era. Besides, the left was unable to reformulate an openly Spanish nationalist discourse during the 1970s, encouraging regional identities instead. This signaled a break with the Spanish nationalist liberal, hampered the creation of an explicit leftist Spanish nationalist discourse following the death of Franco and paved the way for the current left’s ambiguity with regards to contemporary Spanish national identities and Spanish nationalism.

This panel aims at exploring the relationship between contemporary Spanish identities and the left, focusing on the left’s different ideas of the Spanish nation or the diverse levels national identification of citizens and political elites. We welcome case-studies on the subject- matters,  as well as comparative papers.

We look forward to hear from you,

Antonia,
