Assistant Professor (tenured) in International Relations & Security Studies, University of Groningen

The chair group on International Relations and Security Studies at the University of Groningen is looking to strengthen its research in the areas of critical geopolitics and politics of infrastructure (including issue areas like urban security, energy security and health security). Expertise in any of these fields is welcomed. 

Job  description 

The position combines teaching (60%) and research (40%) in the field of International Relations, with an emphasis on issue areas and theories related to Security Studies. In teaching, candidates are expected to provide BA- and MA-level courses, as well as support PhD supervision. Depending on disciplinary background, candidates must be able to contribute to basic introductory courses in areas such as IR theory, history of international relations, international organization, and/or social science research methodologies; as well as specialized courses related to their own research interests. The supervision of students will play an important part in the position. Participation in managerial committees related to the organization of the degree programmes or research grant applications will be expected. In
research the candidate is expected to develop her/his own research projects (both individually and in small teams). The chair group wants to strengthen its research in the areas of critical geopolitics and politics of infrastructure (including issue areas like urban security, energy security and health security). Expertise in any of these fields is welcomed.

Qualifications

The candidate must want to work in an interdisciplinary department. The candidate ideally comes from an interdisciplinary background, is familiar with the current theory debates in International Relations and  Security Studies, and is open for different approaches.

 The candidate's qualities are demonstrated by:

• a completed PhD or evidence of being very close to completion proven by a written statement from the candidate’s supervisor

• proven research results, supported by a list of publications

• further research potential and plans supported by a research plan for the next three years

• confirmed experience in academic teaching, at various levels and in various formats

• excellent demonstrable oral and written skills in English

• excellent social and communicative skills and ability to work in groups

• being prepared to learn Dutch within a period of two years. 

Conditions  of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 3,324 (salary scale 11) and € 5,171 (salary scale 12 Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full time position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. This is a tenure position; the decision on tenure will be taken on the basis of a formal assessment after two years.
